Greek goddess whose name derives from the Greek verb kalùpto (καλύπτω), «to hide» or «to cover».
Calypso in the Odyssey is the one who welcomes the shipwrecked Ulysses in the island of Ogygia. She felt in love with him and offered the immortality to the hero for many years (always refused) until she received from Zeus the order to let him go.
In myths and legends, the beautiful Calypso tamed the sea and all sailors loved and honored her, since she had mortal blood too.
